Contemporary Music Writing Techniques

CLASSROOM
Contemporary Music Writing Techniques teaches students how contemporary songs are put together and what makes them successful. If you want to sell your songs and make a living from your music, then it’s essential that you have an understanding of music theory, composition and arrangement techniques. We also look at the music industry in the 21st Century and explore copyright, publishing and promotion. Practical exercises form an integral part of this course and so students are expected to be able to play an instrument or experienced in music production software such as Logic and Amadeus Pro and etc.

Harmony

WORKSHOP
This module develops skills necessary both for understanding music through notated scores and for critiquing that approach to understanding music by introducing key concepts of how music is studied in its wider contextual spaces. The study of Harmony builds on the knowledge of basic elements acquired in Rudiments to address melody writing, harmonization and analysis. Students will gain an understanding of musical structure and syntax that allows them to engage more deeply with the music they hear and play.

Counterpoint

WORKSHOP
This module tests the application of materials studied in harmony to contrapuntal writing in the style of Baroque period. Counterpoint is the art of combining musical lines so that they sound good together and yet retain certain independence. It is an extremely valuable skill for a musician to study.

Contemporary Music Analysis

WORKSHOP
The module aims to provide students with the tools to effectively analyse music visually and aurally. Such skills are considered fundamental to the student being able to progress effectively to the modules available at upper levels. Alongside the weekly lecture experience students will participate in seminars/workshops designed to develop and increase aural awareness in a variety of contexts.

Instrumental & Ensemble Writing

WORKSHOP
This module aims to give students an opportunity of writing and arranging music for actual instrumentalists, this time in an ensemble setting. It would allow them to see the overall effect of the parts they write or arrange when it is played by an actual ensemble. (If instrumentalists are for some reason, unavailable, this would allow students to zoom in and practice writing for one family of instruments, practice and understand what is effective on one instrumental choir, see how individual instruments of that family blend together, and see how one instrumental choir blends with the other, hone their skills on instrumental choirs and simple tone colour combinations, before moving on to the next module, which is writing for full orchestras in Orchestration and Arranging.)
